Did you know exercise can improve brain function?

Brain Sketch

Executive Function

The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain in charge of executive function. This part is where high-level cognition occurs. The prefrontal cortex also coordinates basic behaviors and cognitive abilities. Exercise has the amazing ability to increase prefrontal cortex-dependent cognitive function. This increase may lead to an increase in planning abilities, decision making, better focus and a higher attention span!

Memory and Learning

The hippocampus is the part of brain that plays the biggest role in memory and learning. Unfortunately, as we get further into adulthood, the hippocampus decreases in size by about 1-2% annually. Consequently, our learning abilities and memory decrease. The good news is that with an adequate amount of moderate-intensity exercise, we can slow down the shrinking of the hippocampus. Research shows that exercise may actually increase the size of the hippocampus by 1-2% annually. This research shows that exercise may help to battle memory loss and improve memory as we age!
